About Gavel:

Gavel is a song all about judgement. While writing this song, I had a good idea of what I felt Judgement was, and how it should be seen, interacted with, and talked about. Before I could feel comfortable writing about that, I had to get some business out of the way: "I love like a Gavel."

The truth of the issue of judgement is that, inherently, it's not meant to be a weapon. Judgement in its purest form is meant to help us differentiate on thing from another. There is an entirely different dimension that fits into that, though; it's the side that we all most often suffer from.

Judgement without love is destructive. To be able to differentiate beautiful from ugly, good from bad, sweet from bitter is great, and often times obvious. But to take the obvious and color it with the life of love and compassion, and to use judgement as a tool to love others, shaping them and being shaped by them, all of that is wonderful and beautiful and great.

My hope is that Judgment will be seen as a gift, that the phrase "stop judging me" will change, and that people will realize that it is not judgment that damns us, but it is the heart behind that judgment.
